God Saves Me!

I am so glad my children and grandchildren were all baptized.

From today’s Meditation devotion:

“Corresponding to that, baptism now saves you--not the removal of dirt from the body but the guarantee of a good conscience before God through the resurrection of Jesus Christ. He went to heaven and is at the right hand of God, with angels, authorities, and powers made subject to him.” (1 Peter 3:21-22EHV)

How powerful is Baptism? "[God] saved us through the washing of rebirth and the renewal by the Holy Spirit" (Titus 3:5). Holy Baptism connects us to Christ's death and resurrection (Romans 6:3-4). You died with him, but you didn't stay dead. You rose with Christ, empowered to live as an obedient child of the King.

You may not remember the event, but you likely received a certificate to commemorate it. Witnesses can testify that you were baptized. Peter declares that you have more than a certificate. You have a guarantee--a legal claim to a good conscience before God. Your baptism was witnessed by God and recorded in his book of life, where binding language states that you now own a conscience that will not condemn you for a single sin before God.

When that voice inside dredges up your devilish deeds, open the floodgates of Baptism and powerwash all the filth away. When your conscience is ablaze with the memories of a misspent life, unreel the fire hose of your baptism and put the wet stuff on the red stuff. When Satan hurls rocks wrapped in reminders of your transgressions, aim the water cannon of your baptism between his eyes. When our Redeemer marched through hell's penitentiary on Easter morning, it was too late for a good conscience to help those prisoners. But the good conscience he won for you will keep you safely out of the grasp of the infernal prison warden.

Baptized into Christ's resurrection, you have already risen from the dead! Your death-defeater friend, R. L. (Resurrection and Life), knocks at your door daily to say, "Let's go! I have some dead people I want you to meet, and we're going to offer them CPR (Christ's Powerful Resuscitation)."

Do you still get discouraged and downhearted? Look up! That's where Christ reigns "at the right hand of God, with angels, authorities, and powers made subject to him." Tell your killjoy conscience to look up too. Jesus is smiling at you--his baptized, beloved, bound-for-glory, certified-holy child.

Baptism is the most powerful thing that ever happened to you. It's when you were christened and given a clean conscience--guaranteed!

Lord Jesus, your saving power claimed me in Baptism. Through your resurrection, help me live a new and holy life, one day at a time.

My prayer for my children

35 Then Jesus declared, “I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to me will never go hungry, and whoever believes in me will never be thirsty. 36 But as I told you, you have seen me and still you do not believe.37 All those the Father gives me will come to me, and whoever comes to me I will never drive away. 38 For I have come down from heaven not to do my will but to do the will of him who sent me. 39 And this is the will of him who sent me, that I shall lose none of all those he has given me, but raise them up at the last day. 40 For my Father’s will is that everyone who looks to the Son and believes in him shall have eternal life, and I will raise them up at the last day.” (NIV John 6)

The passage above was referenced in my devotion today. How reassuring to me it to read ”whoever comes to me I will never drive away.” I have been praying many years for my children who, as they became adults, turned away from the faith the Holy Spirit gave them. But now I am seeing them returning to church and hearing the Word again. I continue to pray that they will find a church community that focuses on God’s scriptures and hearing the Word receive communion and are assured of their salvation.

It's a good morning, Lord, because, as on every morning, you're here with your love. Thank you for another day of grace. Help me and my family to walk in your paths. May we fully recognize and appreciate the love you have shown by laying down your life for us and by the way your guiding and protecting hands hold us with your love. May my heart respond to your love by spreading your love in my little world today. Use me today to do share your love with my family, friends, and all I encounter. Amen.

Every day is a gift of Life!

I have decided to get back to my blog. I remember choosing the title “Present Thoughts” because I wanted it to refer to both thoughts about my days right now and to the idea of life being a gift, a present from God. I read two devotions this morning.

The first one was from a book called Our Worth to Him by Mark Paustian. What I read today was about Jesus’ parable about the tax collector and the Pharisee in church, how the tax collector saw his sins and felt unworthy but the Pharisee was proud of his life and sat right up front. Remember what Jesus said?  “I tell you that this man, rather than the other, went home justified before God.” (PLuke 18:14)The rest of the devotion reminds me of the reason I need to attend worship, to be reminded of my unworthiness and hear about God’s saving Grace, through Jesus, through the Word in Scripture. It reminded me that sometimes  I go to church for the wrong reason, maybe because I want to visit friends, or because I have volunteered to greet or help with the service slides, and sometimes that old Catholic girl in me says it’s my obligation to not miss church…thank you Holy Spirit for reminding me how God’s grace is for me and how much I need it, I need to be in church to say thank you to God.

The second devotion came from the Meditations app, which focused on the verse that says “You are like sheep going astray” (1 Peter 2:25) While I never left my faith, there were times in my past when I didn’t listen to the Holy Spirit in how I lived. But even in my present life there are times when I am distracted and let my focus be on politics and evil in the world or my own desires for more _____. Thank God for Jesus, the Good Shepherd who finds us and brings us back to Him.

I especially like the prayer that started the Meditations devotion and am writing it here, changing it to make it about me:

Lord Jesus, you are the Way, the Truth and the Life. I often become distracted with the cares and concerns of this world. Keep my focus on you and shine the light of your word on my path as I journey through life strengthen me to follow your message of truth that I may have your gift of life and have it to the full. Amen.

This has my head hurting…

 From Dan Rather’s blog:

The 318 days of Donald Trump’s second term have been littered with one outrageous, norm-shattering act after another. The pardon of former Honduran president Juan Orlando Hernández is near the top of the list. And the record of other pardons is long and sickening.

Hernández, who walked out of prison on Tuesday, had been found guilty of trafficking hundreds of tons of cocaine to the United States and taking millions of dollars in bribes from some of the most notorious drug cartels. He had been sentenced to 45 years in prison.

Even more head-scratching, the pardon comes as the administration is arguing that its “war” with drug traffickers is justification for blowing up boats in the Caribbean Sea.

Trump’s pardon of Hernández is not a one-off, it is just the latest in a disturbing pattern of the president using his pardon power not as an act of mercy but one of calculated gain.

Trump is not judicious when it comes to whom he will pardon. He has been on a clemency tear, handing them out like candy, bestowing more pardons in 10 months than most presidents do during an entire term. Beneficiaries include violent criminals, sex offenders, drug traffickers, bribe takers, Ponzi schemers, and money launderers.

The framers gave the president only one unchecked power, the power to pardon, in Article II of the Constitution. The president can pardon anyone convicted of a federal crime, excluding impeachment.

Presidential clemency can be given in one of two ways: a commutation, which is a reduced sentence but doesn’t erase a conviction; or a pardon, which wipes the slate clean, no additional prison time, no restitution, and no record. Almost all of Trump’s acts of clemency have been pardons. This is significant because those he has pardoned owed more than $1.3 billion in restitution to victims and to the American people. That money now will never be paid.

Historically, the Department of Justice oversees the years-long pardon process, following a set of criteria: the person applying for clemency has to have been out of prison for five years. They also need to exhibit remorse, demonstrate good conduct, and pay any money owed.

These basic rules do not apply to any of Trump’s beneficiaries. Of the more than 1,600 Trump pardons, only 10 have gone through the DOJ’s pardon office. It’s not a stretch to believe Trump’s “process” is shorter. Hours? Perhaps days at most?

“All of the traditional rules and procedures pertaining to pardons have been thrown out the window. This administration appears to be working around the Justice Department rather than with the Justice Department to vet and review applications for pardons,” explained former DOJ pardon attorney Elizabeth Oyer on “60 Minutes.”

Oyer was fired from the Justice Department in March when she took issue with restoring gun rights to domestic abuser, actor, and Trump supporter Mel Gibson.

On Inauguration Day, Trump made good on his promise to pardon nearly everyone convicted of participating in the January 6 insurrection trying to overthrow the government, more than 1,500 of them. And it was a sign of how pardons would go during the second Trump term.

According to Axios, Trump was frustrated by the arduous pardon process. On January 20, he lost his patience and said, “F**k it. Release ‘em all.”

Share

A major concern with skipping the DOJ’s standards and requirements is that those who get pardons will go on to commit more crimes. This may come as a shock to no one, but more than a dozen people to whom Trump granted pardons have been arrested again. Take these two:

Andrew Taake - assaulted a police officer with bear spray and a metal whip during the January 6 riots. Since his pardon, he has pled guilty to solicitation of a minor, but will not serve his three-year sentence because of prior time served for his now expunged January 6 conviction.

Edward Kelley - a January 6 rioter who has since been sentenced to life in prison for plotting to assassinate law enforcement officials who investigated his actions during the Capitol riots.

Trump claims his pardons are rebalancing the scales of justice after Biden tipped them. Yes, you read that right. Trump says Biden weaponized the DOJ, and he aims to right that wrong.

To that end, he pardoned loyal sycophants like Rudy Giuliani, who was going down for his efforts to overturn the 2020 election and disgraced former congressman George Santos, who defrauded contributors and was kicked out of the House. In an odd twist, he just pardoned former Democratic lawmaker Henry Cuellar of Texas. He claims Cuellar, indicted for bribery and conspiracy, was targeted by Biden for speaking out against his immigration policies.

He also pardoned Ross Ulbrict. Founder of a dark web marketplace, Ulbrict was sentenced to life in prison for dealing drugs and laundering money. “The scum that worked to convict him were some of the same lunatics who were involved in the modern-day weaponization of the government against me,” Trump posted on social media.

If you want a pardon, it helps to have deep pockets and the president’s ear. Paul Walczak’s mother attended a million-dollar-a-plate Trump fundraiser last April. Miraculously, he received a pardon within weeks.

Vocal Trump supporter Savannah Chrisley lobbied for the release of her parents, reality TV personalities Todd and Julie Chrisley. They were serving time for tax fraud and tax evasion. Savannah got word of the pardons on a call from Trump himself.

Some of the whys are even more transparent.

Trump pardoned Changpeng Zhao, a Chinese crypto billionaire who allowed his company, Binance, to be used for money laundering, including transactions that supported child sex trafficking, drug trafficking, and terrorism. His pardon was given amid extensive business dealings between Zhao and the Trump family’s crypto venture, World Liberty Financial. Remember, this is the guy about whom Trump said on “60 Minutes,” “I don’t know who he is.”

And now to the why of Trump’s pardon for former president Hernández. It took a few days, but The Wall Street Journal found a connection. Honduras is home to an autonomous city called Prospera, made possible by Hernández’s policies. The city is controlled by its founders, Trump supporters and Silicon Valley billionaires Peter Thiel and Marc Andreessen, among others. It enjoys a very low tax rate and no government interference or oversight.

The current Honduran government wants Prospera gone. Trump political advisor Roger Stone — himself a recipient of a presidential pardon — suggested that getting Hernández out of prison would help overthrow the current, more liberal Honduran administration and protect Prospera.

The Founding Fathers had statesmen like George Washington in mind when they decided presidents should be given pardon powers. It was assumed, no doubt, that the leader of the country would be an upstanding citizen who would keep watch and protect the people. The pardon was seen as a final check on the judiciary — one of our many checks and balances — that have been shredded by this president.

In the aftermath of the Trump presidency, so many things should all come under the heading “how do we stop this from ever happening again?” Pardon overreach chief among them.

Death Where is your Victory?

““Where, O death, is your victory? Where, O death, is your sting?””

‭‭1 Corinthians‬ ‭15‬:‭55‬ ‭NIV‬‬

https://bible.com/bible/111/1co.15.55.NIV

This verse came to mind today. after seeing a Facebook post about my dear sister Lou’s  husband who passed away a short while ago in Virginia. It has been a year of sadness for my family, starting with my sister Angie unexpected death last October, then a dear friend,  Mary Ludwig dying in May. My husband’s sister Melodi passed away in July. It has a been a year that makes me think of the short time we have on here on earth, and no one knows how long that time will be.

So getting back to that verse…the sting of death is just that, a sting, something that goes away in time. Some need more time than others, but still it is relatively short for those of us who know the promise from God of eternal life with Jesus. We miss all those who have passed away, and their not being here with us makes us sad, but hopefully remembering the times we were with them makes us smile, too.

Ephesians 2:8-9

For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God— not by works, so that no one can boast.

Fabulous February

Was it though, FABULOUS? I have to say yes, because I am in sunny Florida where our cold temps got down to 40s but only the very early risers would have complained. By the time I got out of bed between 8 and 9 AM the temps were already in the 60s most days. And those cold temps were followed by days of 70s and 80s so FABULOUS! (I am sorry anyone else who may be reading this north of me.)

February had Valentine's Day and our 47th anniversary and Tim's mom's 90th birthday, so three of my favorite celebrations. I enjoy making Valentines and made a set for Isa to give to classmates as well as some for my sisters and friends. (If you are interested in seeing those check out my other blog.) Tim gave me a funny card on our anniversary along with a FABULOUS bouquet of flowers.

Happy Birthday Mum Feb. 19, 2021

I don't snore!

We were fortunate to get our first COVID vaccine shot at the end of January by driving 45 minutes to Tampa and spending a couple hours waiting with hundreds of others, in our cars, not standing fortunately. The next week our governor made an appearance here in Sun City Center to show how he brought shots right to our senior community, so FABULOUS for our friends who only had to drive a few minutes away in golf carts to get their shot. When the time came to get our second shot, we had not received a second appointment, so we drove back to Tampa, like hundreds of others who had not received "the call" only to be turned away after waiting almost two hours. The days went by and I got obsessed with getting that second shot, checking the website and registering again and again. In the meantime my Sun City Center friends got their second shot without any effort. The sins of envy and doubt were taking hold of me and I was miserable. Then Iopened a little journal where I written scripture from devotions that I would want to illustrate in my Bible later. These were written on facing pages:

May the God of hope fill you up with all joy and peace as you trust in him, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit.   Romans 15:13

When I said, "My foot is slipping," your unfailing love LORD, supported me. When anxiety was great within me, your consolation brought me joy.   Psalm 94:18-19

I stopped registering, let go and let God, (a cliche but really what I did). Then, finally, an email yesterday said to click this button to schedule an appointment and it worked! I got appointments for both of us on this coming Tuesday. It will be 33 days instead of the recommended 21, but still trusting God always. I woke up this morning feeling FABULOUS!

Merry Christmas 2020

This is the year that didn't happen. Isn't that what many are saying? This is certainly true for Tim and me. The year we didn't go on vacation to see the family in Oregon and Hawaii. The year we didn't go to PA to see family until Tim's dad passed away and we went to grieve with them, praying we were not going to bring covid to them or home with us. The year we didn't attend church services most Sundays or receive communion frequently. We are thankful that services were available online and that a Christmas Eve service had masks required to be worn for all, so we felt comfortable attending. But it didn't feel the same, because we waved hello to many members but didn't stay to chat or hug.

The pain in my leg finally diminished enough to walk without a cane and sleep for more than 4 hours the first of December. Then my shoulder started hurting, so much that getting dressed was too painful, so Tim became my dresser and began calling me 'Queen" with affection of course. And after months of sitting more and walking less, the lower leg that had vein issues 4 years ago was painful enough that I made an appointment with the vein doctor. These past few weeks, I have not had a full night's sleep, waking after a few hours in pain. That's when I move to the living room recliner and fall back asleep under a heat pad on my shoulder.

So this is the first year I think since joining Resurrection in 1977 that we did not attend church for Christmas Day service. Because the mask rule wasn't applied today and because I was in such pain this morning, I followed Tim's insistence we stay home. We have been using Amazon for many purchases, needs and wants, and I have spent more on stamping supplies this year than any other, so we both agreed we wouldn't buy gifts for each other. I did get Tim a new mug so he would have something to open today and I had gifts from my sister, my niece and my friend Diane to open. We bought candy for our stockings.

Tim has been doing the grocery shopping since the spring because he can do it so much faster than me (I read too many labels and buy stuff not on the list) so he picked out a couple of steaks to grill for our Christmas dinner along with russet potatoes and peas. We also had a store bought pumpkin pie and cookies that were given to us for dessert. But I was not feeling great after sleeping most of the afternoon so had a small piece of one steak and skipped the pie. I think this is the first time that Tim and I were alone for Christmas Day.

But this is Christmas! It is the day we celebrate the babe in the manger who became our Savior on the cross! I started the day watching this video from Time of Grace that helped emphasize that for me:

And then I ended the day listening to the Christmas Day service from a WELS church in California that was put online because that state is on complete lock down. They did an excellent production incorporating members of the congregation and music from two of my favorite bands, Branches Band and Koine. That is one of the blessings of this pandemic, that many churches across the country and in Canada are making their services available online.

So Merry Christmas everyone and Peace be yours because God sent His Son to earth for us to be saved and one day live with him forever in His Kingdom. JOY TO THE WORLD, THE LORD HAS COME!

Happy Thanksgiving Day!

It is Thanksgiving Day 2020 and while I know many in the country are wondering why give thanks, I have much to be grateful: family, friends, and my faith. My husband has been wonderful taking care of my these past two months when walking was painful. My family and friends have sent cards and prayers to heaven. And sitting down has given me time to read my Bible and devotions more and to color in my Bible while contemplating the promise of JOY in the LORD.

I finally have some relief for the pain in my right leg after getting a shot of cortisone in my hip yesterday. I am not 100% yet but getting there. Today I was able to get out of bed without pain and bend more at the waist while sitting. And when I walk it is not near as painful as it was a few days ago. The doctor said it might take a week for full effect.

And here's something that makes me happy, bluebirds splashing in my backyard:

The word of the Lord is my comfort...

Since the beginning of October I have had pain in one leg that, upon further testing, seems to be caused by a bone spur on  my hip. I am trying the less invasive (SLOW) treatment with medication for inflammation. I expect I will need something more like a cortisone shot, but need another 10 days to see. Anyways, because I am doing a lot of sitting and Scripture reading, I have been coloring in my Beautiful Word Bible more often. I had put my coloring aside for a while but started again when I went to PA for 10 days when Tim's dad passed away. It was a way to pass the time and keep me in the word. Here are pages I have colored in the past 6 weeks or so. It is nice to focus on the Bible passages as I color.

My preferred supplies for these is fine line gel pens and colored pencils, but occasionally I also use ink or watercolor as I did for the mountain I drew myself on the page above.

Avoiding Negativity

Wow, I just realized that this post was written back on Sept.7, but never published. So here it is now.

I started my day with a short YouTube video from Time of Grace about negativity. The Bible verse referenced was Psalm 32:5:

Then I acknowledged my sin to you
and did not cover up my iniquity.
I said, “I will confess
    my transgressions to the Lord.”
And you forgave
    the guilt of my sin.

I found that page in my coloring Bible and circled it, then colored the verse that was already on that page. (Ps 32:8) about God instructing in the was to go and keeping his loving eye on us. There was an illustration of a strange looking eye, I thought so I covered it with a compass I stamped and glued it over that spot.

This other page is a quote from Psalm 31:9. I remembered singing that one in church, so while that tune was humming in my head, I hand lettered the first line, stamped the praying hands and the color swatches, sponged color along the edges and glued it onto the page.  I also underlined the full verse. I really like how that one turned out. I really like how that one turned out.

Back to Bible Journaling

I just read my post from May, writing about the virus killing people, changing lives for so many back then. So not much has changed in that regard, but I have gotten back to coloring in my Bibles. First I took a free "class' with Rebekah R. Jones to learn something about using colored pencils in my Bibles. (If you don't know her, check her out on Facebook.) Best thing about colored pencils is no bleed through. So this was the page I did, tracing the fruit from a hand-out she gave us. This was done in my ESV journaling Bible which has space on the margin of each page.

Then I decided to get back to coloring in my Beautiful Word NIV Bible after watching services on Youtube on Sundays.

And I wanted to add a stamped image and colored pencil, so I did this one on the back the Phillipians page above. I think I may go back and trace over what you can see through on that page with a colored pencil.

Tim and I are still doing well. We were sad to not travel this summer to see our little Hawaii family and have Luci here to experience the Star Wars fun at Disney, but hopefully next year... in the meantime, here's a photo of Isabella on her first day of Kindergarten with her teacher Gotta love that unicorn shirt!

This is the day that the Lord has made.

Let us rejoice and be glad in it!
Psalm 118:24

It is a beautiful Sunday today. The sun is shining the birds are singing and butterflies flit about the flowers in my yard. I can certainly rejoice. Easy to say it’s a beautiful day, rejoice. However, there Is a storm bringing excessive wind and rain off another coast, and cold air descended on parts of the country bringing unexpected snow on Mother’s Day. Thousands of people are sick, thousands have died, multiply that by the number of family members who are grieving, not able to be with the loved ones’ bedside. What about the lonely people who yearn to be able to socialize with friends and family again?  And so many without work or paychecks, who worry their businesses may never recover...should they rejoice today? YES and YES! Because we have a promise from God that all our sins are forgotten, washed clean by Jesus‘ death and resurrection, and we have a place in heaven when our time here on Earth is finished. Does that mean sadness and loneliness are not allowed? Of course not. Even Jesus wept at the tomb of his friend Lazarus. But remember the promises and rejoice. I know it is hard to do during times of trouble, and I pray that I will never forget to rejoice.

I just realized today is May 17. Tim and I met 48 years ago on this date at my sister Jo's house. He and his housemates were playing catch out in the street with my nephews. And the rest as they say is history. It has been so long I barely remember a time when Tim was not part of my life. Another reason to rejoice!

Back in the kitchen again

When I retired almost 10 years ago and moved with my husband to Florida, I gave away almost all my cookbooks and chose to have simple suppers and eat out 3 or more times a week. Now I cook every night again, especially with my crock pot. Because I limit grocery shopping to once a week,  I am also using more canned than fresh or frozen vegetables. I am glad I kept a few of my favorite cookbooks. I really miss going to my favorite restaurants with friends.

Short fuses

Yesterday did not start well. A few minutes after waking up my husband told me he ordered some items on Amazon’s grocery delivery service because he does not want to make unnecessary trips to the store. He did this while I was still sleeping, so I did not have any input. That bothered me. Then when I looked up what he ordered, I saw 24 cups of Ramen noodle soup and 4 pounds of rice, two things I do not eat eat much and something we already have in the house. This upset me. When I questioned him about his choices he became defensive. This irritated me. He didn’t order the one thing I am hoping to not run out of, cream for my coffee. (He drinks his black.) This worried me. And of course, he was not happy with my questioning his decisions. We went to our separate corners, as the fighters would say.

I had forgotten a verse of Scripture that is good to live by:

My dear brothers and sisters, take note of this: Everyone should be quick to listen, and slow to become angry.     James1:19

This stay-at-home routine is starting to wear on me. It has been a very slow week since we began this isolated routine. The day got better, I vented to a friend, he confessed to the same friend not knowing I had already done so, and we both looked at the silliness in it all. I will memorize that Bible verse and do my best to live it.

I would love to get comments on this blog. It helps to know I have readers and that I may be, in a small way, making your day brighter.

Backyard Blessings

This is the view from where I often sit in my back porch, or lanai as it is called here in Florida. You can see my bird feeders hanging there and the plants and fountain that my husband installed for me. He calls it my Botannical wonderland. I sit out there more these days because I don’t leave the house as much now with the virus out there, and the weather is just right. Sunny and cool mornings which lead into sunny and warm afternoons.

My feeders have attracted different kinds of birds. Last year we had beautiful bluebirds come for the dried mealworms. I haven’t spotted any yet this year, but I do have a possessive mockingbird who dive bombs other birds who come to the feeders. Perhaps they came and were scared away. When I first hung the feeders many grackles would dominate them. I hung two more feeders, platforms with room for more birds at one time. Since then I haven’t seen the grackles in such large groups., and the seed is lasting longer. I am excited to see a pair of red-bellied woodpeckers come to the two caged tube feeders I filled with a fruit and nut mix. One feeder is made especially for woodpeckers with a place for them to rest their tails. It also is spring loaded so squirrels and multiple birds, or heavy oat tail grackles, force it to close. Unfortunately two woodpeckers at one time are weighty enough to close it, too, so they use both feeders then. Yesterday one was on the feeder when a grackle landed on top. The woodpecker stopped feeding, went to the top of the feeder and faced the grackle with her sharp beak open. That was enough to make the grackle leave. No fighting, just staring down, a Cold War of sorts. On another spring loaded feeder with perches for small birds, I see small palm and pine warblers, and earlier in winter a pair of cardinals as well.

Matthew 6:26
Look at the birds of the air: they neither sow nor reap nor gather into barns, and yet your Heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not of more value than they?

This is Their Lot

It has been awhile since I picked up my daily devotion books but today I woke up earlier than usual and decided this is something I should do regularly, a habit I should develop, going to bed earlier at night so I get a full night's sleep and waking before the sun comes up with time to read my devotion and enter my thoughts here. Today's Scripture passage in the devotion was this:

Ecclesiastes 5:18-20 New International Version (NIV)

18 This is what I have observed to be good: that it is appropriate for a person to eat, to drink and to find satisfaction in their toilsome labor under the sun during the few days of life God has given them—for this is their lot. 19 Moreover, when God gives someone wealth and possessions, and the ability to enjoy them, to accept their lot and be happy in their toil—this is a gift of God. 20 They seldom reflect on the days of their life, because God keeps them occupied with gladness of heart.

Do you see those words in there that made me think of this blog page? "this is a gift of God" Our country is in a crisis right now. The Covid-19 virus, the pandemic, has reached our country: thousands are getting sick, hundreds are dying, hospitals are being overwhelmed with shortages of space and necessary ventilators, gloves, and masks, toilet paper is in high demand and hard to buy, restaurants are closed or open only to carry out, we are told not to gather in groups and to stay away from friends and family, no hugging or shaking hands. This is a gift of God?

Yes, every day is a gift of God and God keeps me occupied with a glad heart. I have the riches of heaven to look forward to because Jesus took on my sins, died on the cross for me, and rose from the dead preparing a way for me to get there. I plan on keeping my focus on the little things I have in my life that bring me joy, the things that make me smile, and the people I am grateful to have in my life.

Big blessings

This is November, a month when we are reminded to count our blessings and be thankful for them. My biggest blessing is my husband Tim. He has been my rock to cling to when through the years waves came crashing and my number one fan ever supportive of all my endeavors. This week I was reminded of how much I need him as I prayed for him as he was in surgery under general anesthesia. The Lord answered all my prayers and those from family and friends with a successful procedure and little pain after. He is cleared to go for walks, but has to wait on bike riding for a few weeks. Now if we can just get out of the discharge area...

Is anybody out there? Does anybody really care?

I am still here. I started this blog when I first moved to Florida. I thought it would be a kind of journal of the good life God has given Tim and me. Life is still good, still loving Florida, but I forget to put into words my gratitude or even update with pictures here. I guess if you follow me on Facebook or Instagram you know what I am doing, so no need to come here to read my thoughts. As I was looking through my photos I found this one of the different ribbons there are to symbolize all the different cancers.

In 2008 when they found I had gallbladder cancer, there were probably 10 or so colors listed and gall bladder wasn't even named. It came in a category called "other" with a black ribbon. I was told at the time it was a very rare form of cancer. Rarer still was the fact that my brother also had gallbladder cancer. He died in November of that year. Now I see the color kelly green is for gallbladder cancer. I like kelly green, reminds me of the luck of the Irish. October was breast cancer awareness month and there is much publicity about those who succumbed or survived it. My friend's daughter died at the age of 35 from an agressive form of it. I must remember to thank my Lord that I caught my cancer early, unlike my brother. I also see that the black ribbon is for melanoma, and ironically I had that, too. Again early detection helped that get taken care of, thanks to the keen eye of that same friend I mentioned before. Unfortunately, her brother died of melanoma a few years earlier. So why are there so many colors now? Is it that these cancers are becoming more common? I hope not. Is it because those who have had cancer touch them want to wear a more specific color than black? I get that. Sometimes during the month of October I feel like telling people, "Hey, there's more cancer out there than just breast cancer!" Instead what I should do is use it to glorify God, for helping me survive, for giving me such a good friend, and for the hope of heaven for all those who fall victim to cancer here on Earth.

Summer 2018

I am trying to get this blog up to date so here are a few pictures to highlight the summer. I was able to travel to Virginia and visit Lou's family for Mothers' Day Sunday.

The flamingo was a gift but not from me!

John and Trulee at Plaza Azteca

In July the kids from Hawaii were able to fly to the mainland and visit with Dan and Sam's family in OR, the PA folks, and return with us to FL.

She was such a good little traveler.

We went to the Florida aquarium.

Making cards in my stamp room.

At the airport waiting to fly out of Tampa.
Then in August I flew to OR to visit Sam and Liane and bring Luci back with me to FL.

Luci caught a lizard on the porch

Luci's favorite activity was driving the golf cart. It was a summer filled with blessings.
